Costing bioinformatics into grants

Currently, LeedsOmics provides the bioinformatic data analysis for projects in University of Leeds based on two models such as costing LeedsOmics in new grants and costing LeedsOmics in current grants.

The procedure of costing LeedsOmics in new grants for FBS and FMH

If you are applying for grant with LeedsOmics support involved, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Arrange a meeting with Senior Bioinformatics Research Officer (SBRO) to discuss the scale, level and complexity of the analysis (e.g., number of samples and comparisons, model organism or non-model organism) and SBRO will provide an approximate cost of time.
  2. If the cost is agreed by both parties, SBRO can provide a data management plan, text for justification of resources, details for environment section and LeedsOmics letter of support to help with the grant application.
  3. Contact the research officers in FBS or FMH for specific guidelines.
  4. For research councils bioinformatics support will be costed as % of SBRO’s time as a directly allocated cost. The research offices can help with this.
  5. To help with grant applications we can provide a small amount of analysis for preliminary data as a pump priming.

The procedure of costing LeedsOmics in current grants for FBS and FMH

If you have a current grant and would like to transfer this over to LeedsOmics to get support, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Arrange a meeting with Senior Bioinformatics Research Officer (SBRO) to discuss the scale, level and complexity of the analysis (e.g., number of samples and comparisons, model organism or non-model organism) and SBRO will provide an approximate cost of time.
  2. If the cost is agreed by both parties, please contact the research officers in FBS or FMH for specific guidelines.
  3. If you have a grant already and need bioinformatics support we can generate a specific monetary value for SBRO’s time to be charged to the grant.
  4. Provide us with grant code to pay for work.
  5. This can also be done for charities etc where appropriate.

The procedure of data analysis

  1. Once the grant is funded or has been transferred to LeedsOmics, arrange a meeting with SBRO again to talk about the specific target of data analysis, timeline, when and how to collect and back up the raw data and so on.
  2. As soon as the data analysis is done, SBRO will inform the PI of the project and report the results in the format of presentation to the PI and plan on the next round of analysis based on the results. This process will go on and on until the project is completely finished.
  3. SBRO will help with the production of figures and writing of methodologies for the potential publications.
